Geography is about developing knowledge and understanding of human places and the natural world. Geography can inspire curiosity about life in other cultures and spark a fascination with the planet we live on.
It gives children the skills and knowledge to develop an understanding of their local environment as well as the diversity of people, places and resources that populate the Earth. Critically, it supports our children to develop a deep understanding of the interaction between human and physical processes and enables them to recognise the importance of sustainable development for future generations.
Without it they would not be able to recognise their place in a globally connected world and make connections between the world’s peoples, cultures, economic systems and diverse environments.
It feeds into our school’s vision by enabling our children to build a shared understanding of our world through talk rich activities and inspirational and aspirational experiences challenge learners to make cross-curricular links. Geography is taught through a clear progression of learning that supports our children to develop their critical thinking and geographical skills year on year.
Geography is taught across the whole school from our youngest children in Year 3 to our eldest in Year 6. Our curriculum ensures that children progressively learn new knowledge and skills so they become inquisitive and curious about the world around them.
Our curriculum ensures that our children:
- Develop knowledge of the location of globally significant places including their defining physical and human characteristics.
- Understand how physical and human processes are interdependent and change over time.
- Are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
- collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork
- interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
- communicate geographical information in a variety of ways
In addition, our children are given regular opportunities to participate in a wide range of inspiration educational visits to support the development of their enquiry and geographical skills. Some of the places that children visit are the local area, nature reserves, wildlife areas and a national park in addition to many others.
As children progress through our school, they develop a secure knowledge of significant human settlements and physical features in Britain and learn to compare and contrast them with other locations in the world. They are also challenged to identify cross-curricular links and develop increasingly complex schema of the world around them.
